Para education Program Advisory Committee-Bill Laney

Discussed ways of increasing enrollment for the Paraeducator program at SLCC:

  • Address expense. At one time, grants were available to paraeducators and districts would help with books.
  • Recruit high school students who may be interested in education as a possible career
  • Many districts do not financially reward paraeducators who participate in extra training such as that offered by SLCC,
  • Meet with districts and educate them on the benefits of training paraeducators and the ways districts can support paraeducators via financial aid, etc
  • “Sell the Program” – make a lot of personal contacts, visit with potential students
  • Increase communication. Many districts are willing to disseminate information on upcoming courses. Several people gave Bill their information to help with dissemination.
  • Make credits applicable to associate degree
  • Add Reading, Writing, Math components to comply with NCLB
  • Offer strands relating to specialties such as
  • Deaf/blind
  • Autism
  • Etc.
